Career Advice and Tips from Human Resources and Industry Experts

The first co-curricular event for the Global Leadership Program was scheduled for Tuesday, September 17th, from 6:30-8:00pm. The panel focused on, "Career Advice and Tips from Human Resource Experts" and included, Shayna Bergman (SPS), Lead Talent Business Advisor, Deloitte, Anna Frick, Recruiter, HR Talent Acquisition, The World Bank Group, Washington DC, June Kress (CAS '71), Principal, June Kress Consulting, LLC, Carla Reed, Director of Human Resources, The Raben Group, and Tara Teaford (MBA '09), Program Manager at srcLogic; Owner at Celebrate Intellect. The Internship Seminar & Fieldwork class was also part of this program.
Each semester a select cohort of NYU undergraduates participate in the Global Leadership Program at NYU Washington, DC. This highly competitive program, which is open to current or rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors from all three of NYU’s degree-granting campuses—in New York City, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai—will foster the practice of ethical and inclusive leadership and will prepare students to assume leadership roles in the public and private sectors.

Shayna Bergman, Lead Talent Business Advisor, Deloitte (SPS)
Shayna Bergman leads Deloitte's Washington National Tax and Quality & Assurance Practices in her role as Lead Talent Business Advisor and is an Adjunct Professor of Communications at The George Washington University, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses including Public Speaking and Professional Communications. Her prior experience includes developing and supporting the People & Learning function at Axiom, a global legal services firm disrupting the legal landscape. In addition, she has served as a private coach for a wide variety of clients who wished to begin, renew or enhance their careers, from students to executives. She also taught graduate level coaching courses at New York University, and has studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. Shayna received her B.A. from The George Washington University and her M.S. in Human Resources Management and Development concentrating in Executive Coaching from New York University. She also holds her SHRM-Senior Certified Professional Accreditation. Currently, Shayna resides in Fairfax, VA with her husband and two children. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, dining out and hiking. Her superb organizational skills can be seen in her busy personal and professional calendars, as well as her kitchen drawers and linen closets.
Anna Frick, Recruiter, HR Talent Acquisition, The World Bank Group, Washington DC
Anna Frick joined the World Bank Group in Washington, DC in 2013. She works with external sourcing & recruitment and is also responsible for using social media for this purpose. Previous to joining the WBG she worked in London for 9 years, primarily with PwC advisory services. Anna has an MSc in International Business Administration from Lund University, Sweden. She has also studied at University of Cologne, Autonomous University in Barcelona and Sorbonne, Paris.
June Kress, Principal, June Kress Consulting, LLC (CAS '71)
June Kress served for nearly 14 years as Executive Director of the Council for Court Excellence (CCE), a local nonprofit that since 1982 has worked to improve the justice system in the Washington DC area. She also spent a decade at the US Department of Justice as a senior policy analyst and for several years taught criminology at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has an extensive community service background as a founder, board member, and board leader of several local organizations, and currently serves on the board of the DC Bar, the Council for Court Excellence, Anne Frank House, Tzedek DC, Interfaith Action for Human Rights, and Foundation for Plastic Recycling. She is also an active member of Leadership Greater Washington and the Cosmos Club. After retiring from CCE in 2017, she established June Kress Consulting, LLC that provides strategic advice to nonprofit executive directors, completed coaching training at Georgetown University’s Institute for Transformational Leadership, received her Associate Certified Coach designation (ACC) from the International Coach Federation, and now has a growing coaching practice with leaders and aspiring leaders in the nonprofit, legal, corporate, and government sectors.
Carla Reed, Director of Human Resources, The Raben Group
As the Director of Human Resources for The Raben Group, Carla Reed oversees compliance, talent and performance management as well as employee relations and brings nearly a decade of progressive human resources experience in the nonprofit sector. She’s passionate about leadership development as well as women’s advocacy and routinely coaches women on the next best steps for their career trajectories.
Acknowledging the importance of professional development, Carla serves on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Campaign Fund (WCF) and is a graduate of WeLEAD, a bipartisan leadership-training program run by the Women & Politics Institute at American University. She’s a former Chair of the Women’s Information Network (WIN) having led the organization during the 2011-2012 executive committee term.
Outside of work, Carla is an ultra-runner and street-style photographer. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Carla received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from Sewanee: The University of the South. She’s also a certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Society for Human Resource Management – Certified Professional (SHRM-CP).
Tara Teaford, Program Manager at srcLogic; Owner at Celebrate Intellect (MBA '09)
Tara Teaford is a career consultant and social entrepreneur who lives in Arlington, Virginia, with her family. Tara graduated cum laude from James Madison University with a B.B.A. in Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship and spent 5 years in hospitality management and retail management before joining a startup tech consulting firm in 2005. While growing that company, Providge Consulting, and taking on a global consulting role as a technical Project Manager at a major pharmaceutical company, Tara earned her MBA in Economics and Social Impact and Innovation from New York University’s Stern School of Business and a Project Management Professional® certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI). In 2017, Tara sold her partnership stake in Providge to launch an education-themed social enterprise called Celebrate Intellect in order to inspire a love of learning and intellectualism in our next generation. She has since begun coaching entrepreneurs and consultants as a Program Manager for a Tyson’s Corner-based technology firm called srcLogic, and last year she started a casual event planning business. Tara is a leader in a local gun violence prevention advocacy group, chairs an Arlington County PTA committee, co-chairs an alternative gift fair to raise funds for local and regional nonprofits, and is very active in her community and her children’s school system.
