Where is US Foreign Policy? Fake News, Nuclear Proliferation, and Proxy Wars

NYU Washington, DC and the Women's Foreign Policy Group co-sponsored the Beyond the Headlines series for a dialogue on U.S. foreign policy. This panel of distinguished reporters discussed current issues related to the role of the United States in foreign affairs during a time of uncertainty as the Administration continues to shakeup the ranks of government at the highest levels.
Natasha Bertrand covers national security and the intelligence community as a staff writer at The Atlantic. Much of her recent coverage has focused on the Russia investigation. Previously, she was a political correspondent and a senior reporter at Business Insider, and before that worked at a political think tank in Madrid, Spain. Elisabeth Bumiller (Moderator) is Washington bureau chief of The New York Times. Previously she was The Times' Washington editor and deputy Washington bureau chief. Before that she covered the Pentagon, the White House, John McCain's 2008 campaign and New York's City Hall for The Times. She also worked for The Washington Post in Washington, New Delhi, Tokyo and New York. In 2006 and 2007, Bumiller was a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center and a Transatlantic Fellow at the German Marshall Fund. David Sanger, The New York Times
David E. Sanger is national security correspondent and senior writer for The New York Times. He is also the author of two Times bestsellers on foreign affairs: The Inheritance: The World Obama Confronts and the Challenges to American Power(2009) and Confront and Conceal: Obama's Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power (2012). He has served as the Times' Tokyo bureau chief, Washington economic correspondent, White House correspondent during the Clinton and Bush Administrations and chief Washington correspondent. Sanger has been a member of three Times teams that won the Pulitzer Prize, most recently the 2017 Pulitzer for international reporting for stories uncovering details of Russia's effort to influence the 2016 presidential election. His next book, The Perfect Weapon: War, Sabotage and Fear in the Cyber Age, will be published this summer. @SangerNYT
Nancy Youssef, The Wall Street Journal
Nancy Youssef is a national security correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. Before joining the Journal, she served as senior national security correspondent for Buzzfeed News and The Daily Beast, as well as national security correspondent for McClatchy Newspapers. She has been based in Cairo and Baghdad and has spent extensive time in the Middle East reporting on US foreign policy and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Youssef began her career in journalism at the Baltimore Sun and the Detroit Free Press. She has won several awards for her work, including UVA's Lawrence Hall Award for Distinguished Journalism covering the Middle East, the Maryland-DC Delaware Press Association and the Detroit chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Youssef holds a master's degree in Security Studies from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and is a founder of the Pentagon Press Association. @nancyayoussef
