Toys for Tots Charity Event
November 21, 2014
The NYU Washington, DC community hosted the 2nd Annual Toys for Tots Charity Event on November 21, 2014. This year, over eleven-thousand dollars was raised in support of this charity, with over 125 guests!
Revilers danced to music by DJ D-Mac, and enjoyed food from Geppetto Catering and Sprinkles Cupcakes. Guests also took part in a silent auction, winning a month supply of KIND products, stay-cation packages with accommodation at The W Hotel and the Renaissance, dinner and event tickets, as well as season tickets to the Nationals, among other items.
We would like to thank all of our sponsors!
6 boxes of new and unwrapped toys were also collected for less-fortunate children.
Miss District of Columbia, Teresa Davis, was the evening's master of ceremonies. Teresa calls the nation's capital home, but she's moved quite a bit in her 23 years. The daughter of a military service member, she was born in South Korea and later spent time in California and Georgia. The experience led to her platform - Five Star Families: A Salute to Our Military and Their Families.
The goal is to help military families, particularly children,... who move from place to place. "I think you miss some things along the way," she said of the military life. "Being a military child, myself, I wanted to focus on the families because they serve just as much," she said. Teresa, a graduate of the University of Georgia, traveled while she was in college as well, taking part in study abroad programs in Cadiz, Spain and at Oxford University in Oxford, England. She had a dual major of digital/broadcast journalism and Spanish.
Teresa comes from a diverse background – her mother is from South Korea, and her father is half-Chilean, making her a quarter Hispanic. Surprisingly, the majority of her family is from Chile. She chose to major in Spanish so she could make a deeper connection to her family.
She previously competed at Miss Georgia and after moving to Washington, D.C. she decided to give that pageant a try this year. She has worked as an intern with the BBC and now works on Capitol Hill in a congressional office. She played the piano at Miss America, a talent she has done since she was about 7.
She hopes to continue to work with our military service members and their family throughout her year as Miss District of Columbia, as well as truly connect with the place that she can now call home.
The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The NYU Washington, DC community is helping to support this program with the Annual Toys for Tots Charity Ball.
