Group therapy provides a safe and confidential place to explore concerns around various issues. Talking to other students who have had similar experiences offers support, healing, and perspective. All groups at NYU are held weekly and led by counselors. For some students, joining a group is one of the most powerful and rewarding experiences they have during their NYU years.
Sign Up for a Group
Students interested in group therapy will first need to schedule a brief 15-minute phone screening with a counselor. The counselor will ask you a few questions to make sure you are being referred to the most appropriate group. During this call, you will also be scheduled to meet with the group facilitator to learn more about the group, have any questions answered, and collaboratively decide if the group is a good fit for you.

Living with Loss
This group helps students who may be feeling isolated in their grief. It provides a safe, supportive space to talk about death and loss with others who share similar experiences.
Making Peace with Food
Do you obsess about your weight and shape? Never feel thin enough? Spend too much time thinking about what you will, or won’t, eat next? This group is for students with eating problems who want to explore, understand, and change these frustrating ways of coping.
This group offers students ongoing clinical and peer support for managing chronic medical conditions (invisible or visible). The group will explore and process combating isolation, ableism, Spoon Theory, Mind-Body Connection, perception of self/relationship to condition, processing grief, relationship to peers and challenges navigating resources. Join anytime during the semester.
Growth Through Connection (Undergrad)
This group is appropriate for undergrads who would like to improve the quality of their relationships with other people. Unfulfilling relationships (professional, friendship, or romantic) may lead to feelings of disconnection and negatively affect mental health, and the COVID-19 pandemic has posed new challenges regarding how we relate to others. This group will help participants learn about their current patterns of interaction and discover new ways of making better connections with others.
Transgender, Gender Nonconforming & Non-Binary Group
This group provides gender non-conforming and transgender students a safe and supportive space to discuss their personal experiences.
Graduate Student Support Group
Graduate school can be a uniquely challenging time. Networking, career planning, balancing academics with other life roles and responsibilities, and navigating relationships with advisors and classmates are just a few of the stressors graduate students typically experience, and the current global pandemic has introduced a host of new ones. It is not uncommon for graduate students to struggle with imposter syndrome and to feel isolated, stuck, and uncertain about dissertations and career trajectories. This group will provide a safe and confidential space for students to authentically share their experiences, connect with peers, and receive support and feedback from each other.
Choices and Change
This group provides a nonjudgmental opportunity for students to discuss concerns about their substance use, identify motivations and triggers, and consider making changes in behavior.
